Council OKs south side rezone

Posted: Tuesday, August 4, 2015 11:45 pm

Local attorney James Millikan appeared before the council Monday with a request to change the zoning for Bailey’s Payne Village Dry Cleaners & Laundromat, 3015 S. 14th St., from R1 (residential) to C1 (commercial). Millikan’s request is in keeping with a recommendation from the Planning Commission.

“This business is a laundromat and it has been for a substantial number of years,” Millikan said. “The idea is to have the entire shopping center zoned the same.”

The council approved Ordinance 3726, which amends the city’s zoning districts to comply with Millikan’s request, on first reading. City Attorney David Copenhaver said a required second reading of the ordinance can’t take place until the council meets Sept. 8 in order to allow time to advertise the matter and conduct a public hearing on it.

Council member Vaughn Reid III shared with Mayor Greg York a couple of concerns he has about the construction being done on the north side of town in conjunction with the city’s long-term control plan and installation of new storm water sewage lines. York explained that while that project is nearing completion, there are still some issues that will be addressed.

“I’ve got a punch list that’s longer than I’d like it to be,” York said. “The road is in and the dust is gone but the project is not done yet. I want to emphasize that there are still some little things, some touch-up work, that needs to be done and it will be.”

The mayor also said repairs to Indiana Avenue near its intersection with Memorial Drive should soon be completed after being asked about the matter by council member Jeff Hancock.
