Income survey planned for next month

Posted: Sunday, March 12, 2017 7:00 am

A random sampling of New Castle residents will soon be asked to answer a short questionnaire about their income.

New Castle City-Clerk Treasurer Christy York is asking those people who receive the survey to complete the short questionnaire scheduled to be delivered to local homes next month and to return it as instructed.

“It’s very important people answer the questionnaires and return them,” she said. “The information will be very helpful when the city applies for grants.”

The survey is being conducted by Kleinpeter Consulting Group of Whiteland, a firm hired by the New Castle Board of Works at a price not to exceed $7,000.

“An income survey is required if we want to go after any grants at the state and federal level,” York said, adding that many government grants require a community to be at least 51 percent low to moderate income. “This study will determine whether we meet that requirement.”

York said Kleinpeter was given the service addresses of residential water customers residing within city limits, but was not given the names of the residents corresponding to those addresses, so the information provided is anonymous.

“It’s all generated through a randomly selected pool and people won’t be asked for their names,” York said.

York wasn’t sure when the last income survey was done in New Castle, but said she believes it has been several years.

Any questions about the surveys may be directed to the clerk’s office at 765-521-6803. The office is located on the ground floor of the city’s municipal building, 227 N. Main St.
