After a 30 year law enforcement career, 20 of which were spent with the New Castle Police Department, Assistant Police Chief Mark Stacy is retiring.

“It’s been neat to meet the people in the community,” Stacy said. “There are some really good people here.

Originally from Knightstown, Stacy grew up in Henry County. At age 19, he joined the United States Air Force and made the decision to become a police officer. He served in the military for four years and worked for six years at the Department of Defense before joining the NCPD.

Over the years, Stacy has been a patrolman, worked in the juvenile aid division, the regular adult detention division and as a detective supervisor. He also served on the SWAT Team and was a local DARE Officer for elementary school students, two things he enjoyed most during his law enforcement career.

Other unforgettable events during his time on the force included investigating family-related homicides or child deaths.

Stacy considered one of the most rewarding aspects of his career to be when he saw a child who had a rough start turn their life around and become a productive member of society.

“I’m going to miss Mark,” said New Castle Police Chief Brad Catron. “We’ve been a team concept here and it’s worked well. He’s helped me. It’s been a team effort. He’s helped bring this department to where it is today. He’s been instrumental in getting things done. He does a good job.”

Following his retirement, which is effective at the first of the year, Stacy will assume a new role as utility office manager for the City of New Castle.

“My entire adult life I’ve been a police officer with the military or here,” Stacy said. “I wanted to try something else. I’m ready for a change.”

During the New Castle City Council meeting Monday Night, Mayor Greg York presented Stacy with a parting gift.

“We want to give him a clock for 20 years of service with the New Castle Police Department and want to tell him thanks for all he’s done for us. Thank you for all of your years of service and all your help here in New Castle,” York said.

With the mayor’s blessing, Chief Catron has appointed Matt Schofield, who currently works with the area drug task force, as Stacy’s replacement.
