Community event today at Baker Park for families with special needs

The New Castle Optimist Clubs are joining together to provide a “Special Day for Special People” from 4-8 p.m. today at Baker Park.

Michael Fisher of the Breakfast Optimist Club said there are a lot of Henry County residents who have physical or developmental special needs. This event will provide a time of fun and fellowship for those community members and their families, he said. The event will also allow families the chance to connect with representatives from Victory Lane Camp, the Miracle League and 321 Go Kids Rehab.

This is the first year for the Special Day for Special People. Fisher said the Optimist clubs plan to focus on children with special needs at first. As the event grows in future years, they hope to include everyone in Henry County who has special needs.

“We want to make their lives a little easier,” Fisher said.

Parents can register their children at Park Shelter #1. All children with special needs who register will receive a free shaved ice courtesy of Phil Hinsey and Tropical Shaved Ice and a free t-shirt. Hotdogs, chips, ice cream cups, water and lemonade will also be available at the Baker Park event.

Families will be able to enjoy a live DJ, a bounce house, frisbee golf, a duck pond, and a bean bag toss. Fisher said the Miracle League will also set up a tee-ball station.

Hagerstown Optimists will join the New Castle clubs as event volunteers. Boy Scouts from Troop #3 will also volunteer at the inaugural event, along with Miracle League Buddies.
