New Castle Fire Department

The City of New Castle boasts a career department with 30 full time firefighters. The department operates with three shifts comprised of nine to ten personnel including; a Battalion Chief, a Captain, a Lieutenant, four Engineers, and three fireground specialists. These firefighters are housed in three fire stations throughout the city. Each shift is 24 hours long starting at 7:00 AM and ending at 7:00 AM the next morning. In addition to fire suppression activities, the New Castle Fire Department also responds to a variety of other emergencies including Hazardous Materials incidents, motor vehicle accidents, water rescues, trench rescues, confined space incidents, technical rescue situations, and emergency medical calls. The New Castle Fire Department has recently entered into an improved partnership with the New Castle First Aid Unit. This cooperative venture has placed a second ambulance in service every day to increase the efficiency and expediency of emergency medical care. When the lights aren't flashing and the sirens aren't blaring, the New Castle firefighters are involved in several other activities such as training, public education, school and group tours, and fire code inspections and enforcement.
Overseeing the department is the responsibility of Fire Chief Jeff Murray.
